San Diego Spearfishing Competitions: Local Events and Qualification Rules

San Diego’s spearfishing scene is among the most competitive and well-organized in California. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or looking to test your skills against serious athletes, understanding the local competition landscape—events, rules, and qualification pathways—is essential to getting started.

The San Diego Spearfishing Calendar

San Diego hosts several major competitions throughout the year, with most concentrated in the warmer months when water conditions and fish populations are optimal.

Spring and Early Summer (April–June) is prime competition season. The San Diego Spearfishing Club typically runs monthly tournaments at various reefs and kelp beds. These events draw 30–80 competitors and rotate between popular spots like The Wreck, Coronado Islands, and La Jolla Shores. Entry fees generally run $40–$75 per diver.

The Southern California Spearfishing Association (SCSA) hosts larger regional competitions that qualify divers for state-level events. Their summer series often takes place at Point Loma and Mission Beach areas, attracting top talent from across Southern California.

Fall tournaments (September–November) are less frequent but often feature larger purses and stricter qualification tiers. Water clarity can be variable, but species like calico bass and sheephead remain abundant in San Diego’s deeper reefs.

Qualification Rules and Entry Tiers

Most San Diego competitions operate under a tiered system designed to match skill levels and maintain fair play.

Novice Division: Open to divers with less than 2 years of competition experience or no prior tournament participation. Novice events typically have looser catch restrictions and are held in shallower, more forgiving zones (30–60 feet). You’ll need proof of spearfishing certification (AAFB, NAUI, or equivalent freediving/scuba certification) and a valid California fishing license. No prior tournament results required.

Intermediate Division: Requires at least one documented tournament participation or 2+ years of active spearfishing experience. These competitions use standard size and species restrictions and may include deeper zones (60–100+ feet). Competitors often hunt mixed species—bass, sheephead, halibut, and yellowtail depending on seasonal availability.

Advanced/Open Division: Reserved for divers with consistent tournament results, typically requiring placement in prior events or SCSA ranking status. These are the most competitive events, with strict catch limits (often 3–5 fish maximum) and species-specific scoring. Advanced divisions frequently hunt at Coronado Islands, Wreck, and offshore reefs where larger, more challenging fish reside.

Local Competition Hotspots

Understanding where competitions take place helps you train effectively and familiarize yourself with the terrain.

The Wreck (Point Loma): A legendary offshore site 2–3 miles out. Depths range 80–120 feet, with calico bass, yellowtail, and large sheephead. Conditions are best April–September when swells are moderate and visibility exceeds 40 feet.

Coronado Islands: Accessible from Coronado and closer to shore than offshore reefs. These islands host frequent beginner and intermediate events due to reliable 50–80 foot depths and consistent fish populations. Summer months offer the best visibility.

La Jolla Shores and Cove: Shallower, more protected zone ideal for novice events. Typical depths of 30–50 feet with abundant calico bass and sand bass. Popular May–July.

Mission Beach/Jetty: Occasional competitions held here target species like halibut and larger bass. Water clarity varies significantly; check conditions before entry day.

How to Enter and Prepare

Most San Diego competitions require pre-registration 1–2 weeks in advance. The San Diego Spearfishing Club and SCSA maintain websites and social media pages with current event schedules and registration links. Some events fill quickly, especially novice and intermediate divisions.

Before entering, ensure you have:

  • Valid California fishing license (required for all divers)
  • Proof of spearfishing or freediving certification
  • Proper equipment: speargun, wetsuit, weight belt, and safety gear
  • Dive flag and float system

Training dives at local spots are strongly recommended. Spend time at The Wreck or Coronado Islands learning fish behavior, reef topography, and current patterns specific to competition zones.

Rules Worth Knowing

All San Diego competitions follow California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) regulations plus additional competition-specific rules. Standard restrictions include:

  • Minimum size limits for each species (calico bass 10 inches, sheephead 12 inches)
  • Bag limits (typically 5 fish total, species-specific caps)
  • Prohibition of spearfishing at night or in marine reserves
  • Mandatory dive flags and surface intervals

Violations result in disqualification and potential permit suspension. Competitions are also strictly catch-and-report—all fish are weighed and measured before release or processing.

Getting Involved

Start by joining the San Diego Spearfishing Club or attending a club meeting to network and learn about upcoming events. Many competitions offer beginner clinics or orientation dives the day before events.
