Swell Direction and Period for Blacks Beach: A Monthly Breakdown

Track swell direction and period at Blacks Beach month-by-month. Learn when S, SW, and W swells peak for San Diego's most consistent reef break.

Swell Direction and Period for Blacks Beach: A Monthly Breakdown

Blacks Beach is one of San Diego’s most reliable and consistent reef breaks, but success here depends on understanding how swell direction and period shift throughout the year. The break’s orientation and shallow reef mean that even small changes in swell angle or period can dramatically affect wave quality. Here’s what you need to know month-by-month to time your sessions right.

Understanding Blacks Beach Swell Dynamics

Blacks Beach breaks over a rocky reef at Torrey Pines, facing northwest. The break responds best to swells with southerly and westerly components—think S, SW, and W directions. Swell period matters equally: longer-period swells (14+ seconds) wrap better around the point and create more organized wave faces, while short-period chop tends to close out the reef.

The beach sits in a sweet spot where southern-hemisphere winter swells and northern-hemisphere summer/fall swells both find their way into the lineup. But timing varies significantly by month.

January–March: Southern Swell Season

Winter brings consistent S and SW swells from Southern Ocean storms. January typically sees 12–16 second periods with regular S swells, making it one of Blacks’ best periods. The water is cold (mid-50s°F), but the swell consistency is unmatched.

February stays strong, though SW swells start mixing in more heavily. Periods often hold at 14–18 seconds—ideal for the reef. Watch for occasional W swells late in the month as Pacific systems approach.

March marks the transition. S swells persist but become less frequent. SW swells dominate, and occasional W swells appear. Periods average 12–15 seconds. Water temperature climbs slightly to upper 50s°F.

Best months for consistency: January and February.

April–June: Transition into Summer

April is notoriously flat for Blacks. Southern swells fade as Southern Hemisphere winter ends. You’ll see mostly light W and NW swells with short periods (8–12 seconds), creating choppy, unorganized conditions. Water temps reach low 60s°F, but the swell isn’t worth the cold.

May improves slightly. Occasional S swells return, but they’re weak. W swells become more prevalent with slightly longer periods (10–14 seconds). Consistency is still poor.

June marks the real shift. Summer NW swells begin firing, though Blacks isn’t ideally oriented for pure NW swell. You’ll see occasional SW and W swells (12–16 second periods) that work better. Water warms to mid-60s°F. Crowds thin out as most surfers chase Sunset Cliffs or Pacific Beach.

Best month to avoid: April.

July–September: Summer Swell Window

July brings consistent W and SW swells with 12–16 second periods. These mid-summer Pacific swells are reliable, though not as organized as winter Southern swells. The reef handles them well, and water temps peak at 68–70°F.

August is similar—W and SW swells dominate with 14–16 second periods. This is a legitimate solid window for Blacks. Early mornings before the wind gets up offer the cleanest conditions.

September sees the first hints of fall swells. S and SW swells return alongside W swells. Periods lengthen to 14–18 seconds. This marks the beginning of Blacks’ second-best season. Water remains warm (upper 60s°F).

Best months for warm water: July and August.

October–December: Fall Peak Season

October is outstanding. Southern Hemisphere spring swells combine with early Northern Hemisphere fall swells. S, SW, and W swells all appear in a single week, with periods consistently 14–18+ seconds. Swell direction often rotates S → SW → W as different storm systems pulse energy.

November rivals October. Expect frequent S and SW swells with 15–18 second periods. W swells appear less often but still provide solid sessions. Water cools to low 60s°F, but the swell quality more than compensates.

December stays strong through early month, then flattens slightly as winter pattern fully sets in. S and SW swells dominate early December (14–16 second periods), but by late month, the break transitions back to pure Southern Ocean swell dependency.

Best months overall: October and November.

Reading the Reef

Blacks Beach’s shallow reef means swell period heavily influences how the break performs. A 12-second S swell will feel mushy and closeout-prone. That same swell at 16+ seconds becomes organized and rideable. Always check period alongside direction—don’t just chase the biggest swell number.

Wind matters too. Morning glass-offs are rare at Blacks because the break faces the wrong direction, but light offshore winds from the east (rare in summer) can help. Most days you’ll deal with onshore wind by mid-morning.

Timing Your Sessions

  • Winter warriors: January–February for the most consistent, longest-period swells.
  • Fall enthusiasts: October–November for variety and consistent quality.
  • Summer backup: July–August if you’re chasing warm water and can paddle out early.
  • Avoid: April and May—flat, choppy, and crowded with frustrated surfers.
