About Wheeler North Reef
The largest artificial reef in the United States: low-relief boulder reef built as SONGS kelp mitigation, running about 2.5 miles from San Mateo Point to just north of the San Clemente Pier, roughly half a mile offshore in 38 to 50 feet. Giant kelp, kelp bass, sheephead, the occasional giant sea bass, and lobster. Boat or kayak access. Best in summer, when swell and San Mateo Creek runoff ease off.
